Chapter 8 - THE BIRTH OF A NEW EMPIREThe contractions started at 3:14 AM on a crisp Tuesday morning.

There was no panic, no screaming, and no toxic husband hovering in the background complaining about how my labor inconvenienced his schedule. I calmly called Melanie, who was parked outside my building within ten minutes, and we drove directly to Northwestern Memorial Hospital overlooking the lake.

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, after an intense and empowering delivery, the sterile delivery room filled with the lusty, healthy cry of a baby boy.

The nurse placed him gently on my chest—warm, squirming, and smelling of newborn perfection. He had a full head of dark hair and ten tiny, flawless fingers.

Melanie stood beside the hospital bed wiping away a tear of pure joy, while Arthur Vance stood by the doorway holding a legal courier pouch with a wide, triumphant grin.

"Well, Madame CEO," Arthur said, holding up a fresh corporate filing. "The ink is dry. The final bankruptcy liquidation of Waverly Pacific is complete, and Bennett Global has officially acquired all remaining patents, real estate holdings, and subsidiary assets for pennies on the dollar. Furthermore, the family court judge just signed off on the default divorce decree, granting you sole, unencumbered custody of your son."

I looked down at the tiny baby resting against my heart, then up at Arthur and Melanie.

"What's his name?" Melanie whispered, leaning over to stroke the baby's soft cheek.

I smiled, feeling a profound wave of absolute peace wash away every lingering shadow of the past.

"Alexander Bennett," I said firmly, kissing the top of my son's head. "No hyphen. No ghosts. Just Bennett."
