Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW OF BENNETT GLOBAL

The ringing of the private office phone didn't break my concentration; it punctuated it. I didn't look up from the quarterly fiscal reports spread across my mahogany desk until I had finished signing off on the last logistics acquisition for our European supply lines.

"Put it through, Melanie," I said calmly without lifting my eyes.

Melanie Foster, now officially Chief Operating Officer of Bennett Global Enterprises, stepped into my office holding a heavily encrypted tablet. Her expression was a mix of professional coldness and suppressed agitation.

"You're going to want to see this, Claire," Melanie said, spinning the tablet around. "The federal appeals court just denied Grant's latest motion for bail reduction. But that's not the interesting part. Look at who just posted a multi-million-dollar retainage fee into his defense escrow account."

I finally looked up, my eyes narrowing as I scanned the financial ledger on the screen. The name listed as the anonymous benefactor of Grant Waverly’s plummeting legal team wasn't an offshore shell corporation or a disgraced board member.

It was Victoria Sterling.

"Victoria," I murmured, tasting the name like a stale vintage. "The daughter of Arthur Sterling, the disgraced steel tycoon whose assets we bought out last winter. She’s trying to buy herself a puppet."

"More than that," Melanie warned, crossing her arms. "Victoria has been moving quietly through the Chicago philanthropic circuit, whispering that your corporate takeover was a hostile coup born out of a vindictive personal vendetta. She’s trying to unite the old guard—the old boys' clubs that Grant used to golf with—to launch a hostile shareholder proxy vote against us at the upcoming annual summit."

I leaned back in my leather chair, a cold, sharp smile touching the corners of my lips. Victoria Sterling thought she could play chess with a woman who had already checkmated a grandmaster.

"Let her try," I whispered, standing up and walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering Chicago skyline. "If Victoria wants to tie her fading fortune to a sinking ship, we’ll make sure she goes down right beside him."
