Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDITBy 2:00 AM, the penthouse suite had transformed into an impromptu war room.

Melanie had contacted Arthur Vance—my father’s former senior partner and the most ruthless corporate litigator in Illinois. Arthur didn't bother offering condolences for my torn dress or the emotional trauma of my birthday. He was a shark who smelled blood in the water, and right now, the entire corporate ocean belonged to us.
"The freeze order is absolute, Claire," Arthur said via a secure encrypted video link on the living room television. His sharp eyes scanned documents on his own end. "Waverly Pacific’s bank accounts are locked. No wire transfers, no payroll disbursements, no liquid asset movement. Furthermore, because of the forensic indicators you provided this afternoon regarding offshore shell accounts in the Cayman Islands, the SEC has already been tipped off."
Marjorie sat rigidly on the velvet sofa, her hands trembling as she held a lukewarm cup of tea. "Offshore accounts? Grant told me those were legitimate European subsidiary holdings for our supply chain expansion."
"They weren't, Marjorie," I said, walking over to pour myself a glass of ice water. "Your precious son has been systematically siphoning corporate capital to fund Sabrina Hale’s luxury lifestyle—including the downtown penthouse she lives in, her designer wardrobes, and yes, the custom diamond bracelet he stole from my dressing room to buy her loyalty."
"He's my only son," Marjorie whispered, a tear finally escaping her eye. "He inherited his father's ambition, but none of his honor."
"No, Marjorie," I said, turning to face her with a gaze as cold as the ice in my glass. "He inherited his father's cruelty, and he amplified it because everyone let him win. But tonight, the game ended."
Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the penthouse suite rattled violently. Heavy, rhythmic pounding echoed through the private foyer, accompanied by muffled shouts.
"Open up! Federal marshals! We have a court-ordered warrant for asset seizure and corporate subpoena service for Grant Waverly!"
Melanie exchanged a sharp glance with me. "They didn't waste any time."
I walked to the foyer myself, my bare feet sinking into the plush carpet, my torn champagne-silk dress hanging loosely off one shoulder like a badge of war. I unlocked the heavy deadbolt and swung the door open.
Standing in the hallway were two federal agents in dark suits, flanked by local police officers. Behind them, looking disheveled, sweating through his custom Brioni tuxedo with his tie ripped off, stood Grant.
His eyes locked onto mine, wide with a mixture of absolute fury and stark terror.
"Claire..." Grant choked out, taking a step forward. "Tell them. Tell them this is a domestic dispute, tell them we can settle this inside the family—"
Agent Miller, the lead federal investigator, stepped directly into Grant's path, flashing a heavy gold shield. "Mr. Waverly, step back. Mrs. Waverly is not your concern right now. In fact, according to the emergency protective order issued forty minutes ago, you are required to maintain a minimum distance of five hundred feet from her at all times."
Grant stared at me, his chest heaving. The mighty CEO of Waverly Pacific Foods—a man who dictated terms to farmers, distributors, and billionaires alike—looked like a drowning animal.
"You planned this," Grant hissed, his voice trembling with venom as the agents moved in to place heavy zip-ties on his wrists. "You planned every damn second of it. The party, the cameras, the divorce papers..."
I tilted my head, letting a small, cold smile touch my lips.
May you like
"No, Grant," I whispered, stepping close enough for him to smell the champagne on my breath. "I didn't plan for you to be a monster. I just finally stopped hiding it for you."
As they dragged him down the hallway toward the service elevators, flashing lights catching the metallic glint of handcuffs, I felt a profound, breathtaking lightness in my chest.
