Chapter 13 - THE GALAS OF GHOSTSThe annual Chicago Children's Hospital Charity Gala was the premier social event of the autumn season. Held beneath the very same crystal chandeliers of the Bellmont Hotel where my life had shattered a year ago, the ballroom was a dazzling display of wealth, diamonds, and forced smiles.

When I stepped out of the private elevator on Melanie’s arm, wearing a custom-tailored emerald-green silk gown that cascaded gracefully over my frame, the entire room went silent.

It wasn't the shocked silence of a scandal this time. It was the hushed, reverent stillness paid to true power.

Flashbulbs popped instantly. Photographers scrambled to capture the woman who had transformed Bennett Global into a multi-billion-dollar empire. But as I walked down the grand marble staircase, my eyes locked onto a familiar, unwelcome sight standing near the champagne tower.

Victoria Sterling.

She was draped in glittering white diamonds, standing beside a group of old-guard corporate executives who had spent the last year whispering behind my back. As I approached, Victoria raised her champagne flute, a venomous smile plastered across her face.

"Well, well. Look who decided to grace us with her presence," Victoria purred loudly enough for the surrounding tables to hear. "Tell me, Claire... does it feel lonely sitting at the top of an empire built on a broken marriage and a stolen corporate name?"

The surrounding guests held their breath, waiting for a catfight. They expected tears, or anger, or a hasty retreat.

Instead, I stopped just two feet away from her, tilted my head, and let out a calm, melodic laugh.

"Not at all, Victoria," I replied, my voice carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom. "In fact, the view from the top is magnificent. Though I must ask... how is your investment portfolio doing? I heard you recently funneled millions into a federal appeals fund for a bankrupt, disgraced criminal. Tell me, does prison orange really match your skin tone, or are you just practicing for when your own insider trading investigation goes public?"

Victoria’s glass trembled in her hand, the champagne spilling over the rim onto her designer gown. Her face drained of all color as murmurs erupted from the surrounding tables.

"You... you bitch," Victoria hissed, stepping forward.

Before she could move another inch, two security directors from Bennett Global—discreet men in tailored tuxedos—stepped seamlessly between us.

"Mrs. Bennett's schedule is quite full this evening, Miss Sterling," the lead security head said smoothly. "I suggest you step back before we review your invitation credentials."

I didn't even look back as I walked past her toward the VIP head table. Some wars aren't fought with fists or screams. They are won with a single sentence.
