Chapter 17 - THE WHISPERS OF THE PASTLater that evening, after Alexander had fallen fast asleep in his crib, Julian and I sat on the private terrace under a canopy of brilliant stars, listening to the gentle lapping of the lake against the shore.

"Did you hear about Grant?" Julian asked softly, breaking the quiet.
I turned my head slightly, my expression calm. "No. What happened?"
"He was transferred to a psychiatric unit within the federal prison system last week," Julian said, his eyes filled with quiet empathy. "According to the reports, he completely lost touch with reality. He spends his days screaming at empty hallways, demanding that people bow to the CEO of Waverly Pacific, completely convinced he's still a billionaire."
I stared out at the dark waters of Lake Geneva, feeling neither pity nor malice. Just a profound sense of closure.
"He spent his entire life building an illusion," I murmured, taking a sip of wine. "The moment the illusion shattered, he had nothing left inside."

"You broke him, Claire," Julian smiled gently, turning to face me. "Not with a weapon, not with anger, but with your own unbreakable strength."
"No, Julian," I corrected, reaching out to touch his cheek. "Grant broke himself. I just stopped helping him hold the pieces together."
