Chapter 12 - The Bratva’s InvitationBy evening, the response arrived in the form of a gold-embossed invitation delivered by a terrified courier. Valentin Koslov was hosting an exclusive high-stakes poker tournament at The Obsidian Room, his underground casino nestled beneath the meatpacking district. The RSVP requested the presence of Chicago's newest power couple.

"It's a trap," I said, eyeing the card as Alexander adjusted his silk tie in front of the mirror.
"Of course it's a trap," Alexander replied smoothly, slipping a customized diamond-hilted switchblade into his jacket pocket. "The question is whether Koslov realizes he is the one walking into it."
I walked over to my closet and pulled out a midnight-blue velvet gown, sliding a holster strap smoothly around my thigh before securing a compact firearm against my skin. Alexander watched me through the mirror, a proud, dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips.

"You look breathtaking, Mrs. Whitmore," he murmured, stepping over to kiss the top of my head.
"Don't sound so surprised, Mr. Whitmore," I teased, checking the safety of the weapon. "I told you long ago—I'm not a victim anymore."
