Chapter 8 - The Unseen EnemyTwo weeks before the actual wedding date, the illusion of our untouchable safety shattered.

We were returning from a charity gala when an unmarked black SUV intercepted our limousine on Lake Shore Drive, forcing our driver into a violent skid against the concrete barrier.

Gunfire peppered the reinforced glass.

Alexander didn't flinch. He shoved me down onto the floorboards of the car, shielding my body with his own as the sound of shattering glass and popping rounds filled the cabin.

"Stay down!" he snarled, pulling a heavy Glock from his shoulder holster with terrifying efficiency.

Before I could process what was happening, the doors of our car were ripped open. But it wasn't an assassin standing there—it was Elena, holding a smoking pistol, her face twisted in a mask of pure, unhinged fury.

"You took everything from my son!" Elena shrieked, raising the barrel directly toward Alexander’s head. "You gave his empire to a whore!"

Before she could pull the trigger, a shot echoed from behind her. Elena dropped her weapon, gasping as she stumbled backward, collapsing onto the asphalt.

Stepping out from the shadows of our security detail, Alexander’s head of security lowered his smoking weapon.

Alexander slowly climbed out of the car, pulling me up with him. He looked down at his sister-in-law with cold, lifeless eyes. "You should have stayed in Paris, Elena."
