Chapter 2 - The Contract of the CenturyThe fallout was immediate.

As Alexander escorted me down the aisle—not as a rejected bride, but as his intended—the murmurs erupted into a deafening roar. Mason lunged forward, his face contorted in rage. "You can't do this! She's a fraud! She's marrying you for your money too!"

Alexander stopped, turning his head just enough to look at his nephew through his lashes. "She is marrying me. That means her debts are now my ledger, Mason. And unlike you, I pay my debts in full."

Within twenty-four hours, Carter Manufacturing’s looming bankruptcies vanished. Not because of a loan, but because an anonymous shell company—tied directly to Alexander’s holding firm—bought out every single lien, debt, and hostile creditor holding my father’s company hostage.

We sat in Alexander’s obsidian-glass penthouse overlooking a glittering Chicago skyline. The room smelled of expensive bourbon, cedarwood, and rain.

"You didn't have to do that," I said, clutching a silk robe tightly around myself. The wedding dress was packed away in a corner box, discarded like trash.

Alexander poured two fingers of amber liquid into a crystal tumbler, not looking at me. "I don't do charity, Emily. Every action has a purpose."

"Then what is your purpose?" I challenged, stepping closer. "Why me? You could have any woman in this city. Why step into my public execution and put a target on your own back?"

He turned, setting the glass down with a sharp clink. He walked over until he was towering right above me, his gaze burning into mine. "Because my nephew needed to learn that some things in this world do not belong to him. And because," he reached out, trailing a single knuckle down my jawline, "when I saw you fall, you didn't look like a victim. You looked like someone ready to bite back."
