Chapter 15 - The Price of EmpireWithin forty-eight hours, the Bratva’s presence in Chicago was entirely dismantled. Their assets were absorbed into our logistics grid, cementing the Whitmore syndicate as the absolute, unchecked ruler of the Midwest underworld.

We stood on the private helipad of our corporate tower, watching a chopper carry Koslov’s remaining loyalists out of the city limits. The wind whipped through my hair, carrying the sharp scent of ozone and impending rain.

Alexander stepped up behind me, pulling a heavy cashmere coat tighter around my shoulders. "Are you satisfied, my queen?"

I leaned back into his warmth, watching the city lights stretch out below us like a sea of burning stars. "Satisfied? No. But I’m realizing that power is a lot like an addiction, Alexander."

He chuckled softly, kissing the side of my neck. "Welcome to the club, Emily. There is no rehab for people like us."

Just as we turned to head back inside, my phone buzzed in my pocket. A single text message from an unknown, encrypted number flashed on the screen: Congratulations on your victory in Chicago. But the game isn't finished until the board is wiped clean in New York.

I froze, reading the words twice.
