Chapter 3 - The Dinner of the WolvesThe true test of our sudden engagement came three days later at the Whitmore family estate—a sprawling Gothic fortress on the outskirts of Lake Geneva.

The dining table could comfortably seat twenty, but tonight, only four people sat around it: Alexander, myself, Mason, and Mason’s mother, Elena—Alexander’s ruthless, sharp-tongued sister-in-law.
Elena slammed her fork down, the silver clattering against fine porcelain. "Have you lost your absolute mind, Alexander? You are bringing a bankrupt nobody into this family? A girl who lied to my son?"
I opened my mouth to reply, but Alexander raised a single hand, silencing his sister-in-law instantly.
"Mind your tone, Elena," Alexander said smoothly, slicing into his rare steak. "Emily is no longer a 'nobody.' She is my fiancée. Which makes her your superior in this house."
Mason’s knuckles turned white around his wine glass. He glared at me with pure, unadulterated venom. "She’s a leech, Uncle. Give it a week. She’ll bleed you dry just like she did my accounts."
I couldn't stay silent anymore. I set my napkin down slowly, locking eyes with Mason across the candlelight.
"Your accounts, Mason? You mean the ones you drained to fund your secret offshore venture in the Cayman Islands while telling me we had to cut back on the wedding flowers?"
The entire table went dead silent.
Mason choked on his breath, his face instantly turning a sickly shade of purple. "What... what did you say?"

I leaned forward, offering him a sweet, venomous smile. "Did you really think I didn't look at the joint statements before the wedding? I kept your secrets to protect your family's name. A luxury you apparently didn't extend to mine."
Alexander let out a low, dangerous chuckle beside me, his hand resting possessively on the small of my back.
