Chapter 4 - Uncovering the LedgerLater that night, away from the prying eyes of the family, Alexander led me down a subterranean hallway in the estate that smelled of old paper and leather. He unlocked a heavy steel door with a biometric scanner.

Inside was a high-tech command center—screens flashing security feeds, financial tickers, and encrypted intelligence reports.
"You knew about Mason's offshore accounts," Alexander stated, not as a question, but as an observation. He crossed his arms, leaning against a mahogany desk.
"I found them the night before the wedding," I admitted, running my fingers along the edge of a map tracking Chicago’s shipping routes. "He was planning to frame my father for embezzlement to cover his own tracks. That’s why he blew up the wedding. He wanted me disgraced so no one would believe me if I spoke out."
Alexander stared at me for a long, intense moment. A slow, approving smile crept onto his face—a rare, dangerous expression that made him look both terrifying and breathtaking.
"You are much more dangerous than my nephew gave you credit for," he murmured, stepping closer. "Which is good. Because being Mrs. Whitmore requires a predator, not a victim."

"And what makes you think I want to stay Mrs. Whitmore once the debt is paid?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs as he trapped me between his arms and the edge of the desk.
"Because," Alexander whispered, his breath hot against my ear, "you didn't just accept my ring to save your father's company, Emily. You accepted it because you want revenge. And I am the best weapon money can buy."
