Chapter 13 - Blood on the Green FeltThe Obsidian Room smelled of expensive cigars, cheap whiskey, and palpable tension. Armed guards stood at every exit, their heavy coats bulging with submachine guns. When Alexander and I walked through the double doors, the ambient chatter dropped to a cautious hush.

Valentin Koslov—a massive man with a jagged scar splitting his left eyebrow—sat at the center VIP poker table, surrounded by his lieutenants. He grinned, revealing a flash of gold teeth.

"Alexander! And the famous bride who broke half of Chicago's hearts," Koslov boomed, spreading his arms wide. "Sit. Play. Let's see if your luck at the table matches your luck in business."

Alexander pulled out a velvet-lined chair for me before taking a seat himself. "Luck is for amateurs, Valentin. We prefer certainty."

The game began with millions riding on every hand. Koslov tried every psychological trick in the book, staring me down across the green felt, testing our nerves. But after everything Mason had put me through, a Russian mob boss throwing a temper tantrum felt remarkably manageable.

On the fifth hand, I pushed all my chips to the center of the table. "I'm all in, Valentin."

Koslov laughed heartily, revealing his cards—a full house. "Brave words, little bird. Let's see what you're hiding."

I slowly turned over my cards, revealing a royal flush. The air sucked out of the room. Koslov’s smile vanished instantly, his face turning an ugly shade of mottled red.

"You cheated," Koslov snarled, slamming his hands onto the table and standing up. His guards immediately unholstered their weapons.
