Chapter 7 - Shadows in the PenthouseWith Mason behind bars and the family board completely under Alexander’s control, the "fake" engagement began to blur dangerously into reality.

We spent our evenings in the penthouse, not discussing business, but slowly peeling back the armor we both wore. I learned about the scars on Alexander's body—remnants of a war he fought years ago to seize control of the Chicago underworld. He learned about the sleepless nights I spent staring at ceiling fans, terrified my father would lose everything he built.
One night, as a thunderstorm shook the glass windows of the penthouse, Alexander stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the lightning flash across Lake Michigan.

"You didn't have to ruin him completely," I whispered softly.
Alexander turned around, his dark eyes searching mine in the dim, storm-lit room. "He tried to destroy you, Emily. In my world, an attempted assassination—social or otherwise—is met with total annihilation."
He caught my hand, pulling me flush against his chest. His thumb traced my lower lip, his gaze dropping to my mouth. "Are you afraid of me?"
May you like
"If I were smart," I breathed, my heart racing, "I would be."
"Good," he murmured, before crashing his lips down onto mine in a fierce, consuming kiss that swept away any remaining doubt.
