Chapter 15 - The Final ConfessionTwo days later, in a secure holding room at the federal detention center, I sat across a stainless-steel table from Julian Thorne.

He looked smaller than ever, wearing an orange jumpsuit that swallowed his frame. His hands were clasped tightly together on the table.

"The federal prosecutor offered a plea deal," Julian whispered, not daring to meet my eyes. "Five years in a minimum-security facility if I testify against Victor and hand over all remaining corporate assets."

"That sounds fair," I replied evenly, resting my portfolio on the table. "Considering you tried to ruin my life, five years in a federal cell is remarkably generous."

Julian swallowed hard, a single tear rolling down his cheek. "I deserved worse, Elena. I know that now. Every single day I spent in that motel, every time I looked at my reflection... I realized what I threw away. Not just the money or the house. I threw away the only person who ever truly cared about me."

I looked at him—not with anger, nor with pity, but with complete and utter indifference.

"You didn't throw away a person, Julian," I said softly. "You threw away a reflection of your own inflated ego. You thought love was a weakness you could exploit."

I stood up, smoothing my jacket.

"What happens to me now?" Julian asked, his voice breaking. "Is there... is there any chance, years from now...?"

"Don't finish that sentence, Julian," I interrupted, walking toward the heavy metal door. "The divorce is final. The assets are recovered. And my life is entirely my own."

I pushed the door open, stepping out into the bright, warm California sunlight.
