Chapter 9 - The Final AuditBack in the executive suite, Marcus placed the final audit report of Thorne Capital on my desk.

"Well, that wraps up the liquidation," Marcus said, sinking into the armchair opposite my desk. "All residual debts have been settled, the subsidiary shell companies have been dissolved, and the Bel Air estate has been fully integrated into the Vance historical real estate portfolio."
"Good," I said, signing the final digital authorization on my tablet. "What is the status of Julian’s personal bankruptcy filing?"
"He filed for Chapter 7 yesterday afternoon," Marcus smiled faintly. "He has zero liquid assets, no properties, and his professional license is currently under review by the state financial regulatory board for corporate malpractice."
Marcus leaned forward, studying my face. "You know, Elena, you could have crushed him completely six months ago when you first discovered his affair. Why wait until the dinner party? Why let him go through all of that performance with the one-dollar bill?"
I looked out the window, watching the distant Pacific Ocean glinting under the afternoon sun.
"Because a wolf doesn't fight a dog in the middle of the street, Marcus," I said softly. "You let the dog run. You let him think he’s captured the sheep. You let him bite into the trap until he realizes that the chain was anchored to the mountain the entire time."

Marcus laughed, shaking his head in quiet admiration. "Uncle Arthur would have been proud of you, Elena. You have the true Vance ice in your veins."
"I just wanted a quiet life," I replied, closing the folder. "Julian and his family made too much noise. So I decided to turn the volume down permanently."
