Chapter 22 - The Inner Circle AuditBy sunrise, the executive suite in Zurich was operating under a veneer of absolute, unshakeable normalcy. To the outside world, I was simply overseeing the quarterly infrastructure review. Behind the scenes, however, Marcus and I had initiated a silent, invisible counter-surveillance operation dubbed Project Silent Watch.

Every digital keystroke, every communication log, and every encrypted data transfer across Vance Global’s top-tier servers was being mirrored and analyzed in real-time by an isolated, air-gapped server room three floors beneath us.

I sat at the obsidian conference table, reviewing the performance metrics of our Asian shipping lanes. Seated around the mahogany table were the six highest-ranking executives of the European branch:

Director Henrik Lindqvist – Head of European Acquisitions, a veteran of the firm with twenty years of loyal service.

Clara Vance-DuPont – A distant cousin from the French branch, heading international public relations.

Dr. Aris Thorne – No relation to Julian, our chief cybersecurity architect, headhunted from MIT three years ago.

Matthias Vance – Senior legal counsel and compliance officer.

Sabine Moreau – Head of Global Risk Assessment.

Julian's Ghost – Or rather, the phantom anxiety lingering in the back of my mind regarding Victor’s alleged sleeper agent.

"The expansion into the Singapore maritime corridor is performing twenty percent above projections," Henrik Lindqvist reported, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "However, we have encountered a minor administrative bottleneck regarding the regional tax compliance codes handled by our primary escrow partner in Zurich."

I looked up from my tablet, my eyes resting calmly on Henrik. "What kind of bottleneck, Henrik?"

"Nothing insurmountable," Henrik smiled smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair. "Just a minor discrepancy in the digital signature verification protocol. The escrow partner requires an emergency override token to authorize the tax exemption clearance before midnight tonight. I have the clearance form right here for your digital signature, Madam Chairwoman."

Dr. Aris Thorne adjusted his glasses, leaning forward. "Actually, Director Lindqvist, the digital signature verification protocol for regional escrow partners was updated last month. An emergency override token requires dual-authentication from both the compliance officer and the cybersecurity director. Why wasn't my office notified of this exemption request?"

Henrik’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second—so fast that ninety-nine percent of people would have missed it. But I didn't miss it.

"Ah, Oversight, Dr. Thorne," Henrik laughed lightly, though a faint sheen of sweat appeared on his forehead. "It was rushed through under an expedited executive tier due to the Singapore shipping deadlines. Surely the Chairwoman understands the urgency of keeping our vessels moving."

I didn't answer immediately. I picked up my silver pen, rolling it slowly between my fingers.

"Urgency is a very dangerous thing, Henrik," I said softly, the silence in the room instantly growing heavy. "My grandfather always taught me that when someone asks you to bypass protocol under the guise of an emergency, they aren't trying to save the company time. They are trying to hide what’s inside the package."

Matthias Vance, our compliance officer, frowned, opening his laptop. "Let me check the ledger logs for that Singapore escrow partner. Give me a moment..."

Suddenly, Dr. Aris Thorne’s laptop screen flashed red.
