I sat in the leather-upholstered cabin, reviewing the final financial audits on my tablet. Every subsidiary was profitable. Every account was secure. Every risk factor had been mitigated.
Marcus handed me a glass of sparkling mineral water. "Thinking about how far you’ve come?"
"I’m thinking about how much energy people waste on cruelty," I said, taking a sip. "Julian and his family spent years trying to diminish my worth because they thought quietness equaled submission. They never realized that true power doesn't need to shout."

"Well, your enemies are certainly quiet now," Marcus chuckled. "Beatrice is living in a studio apartment off the interstate. Camilla’s social media accounts were permanently banned. Chloe is working a minimum-wage retail job in an industrial suburb. And Julian is facing five years behind bars."
"Good," I said quietly, locking my tablet. "Let them live in the quiet they created."
