Chapter 3 - The Collapse of the House of Cards"No... no, no, no," Julian muttered, shaking his head frantically as he began grabbing documents from the table. "This is a forgery! You’re just a nobody from an ordinary background! I ran background checks on you when we met! You lived in a modest apartment in Seattle! You worked as an archivist!"

"My father believed in discretion, Julian," I replied, walking over to the fireplace and warming my hands. "He taught me that a true wolf doesn't bark in the woods; it waits until the sheep walk straight into the slaughterhouse. You thought my quietness was weakness. You thought my cooking and my patience meant I was a domestic servant you could discard for a twenty-four-year-old junior agent."

I turned to look at Chloe, who was now backing away from the table as if the very air around her was toxic.

"As for you, Chloe," I said, letting my gaze drift over her designer logo dress. "You’re an at-will employee at Thorne Capital, correct? Earning a base salary of eighty-five thousand dollars a year?"

Chloe swallowed hard, her voice losing its previous venom. "What... what does that have to do with anything?"

"It has everything to do with the fact that purchasing a ten-million-dollar property for one dollar constitutes corporate fraud, tax evasion, and illicit asset transfer under federal statutes," I said calmly. "Especially when the property didn't belong to the seller in the first place, and the funds used for the transaction—even if it was a symbolic dollar—were routed through a compromised corporate ledger."

Leo panicked, slamming his fists on the table. "You can't do this! You're just doing this out of spite because Julian is leaving you! We'll sue you! We'll drag you through every court in the country!"

"Sue me with what money, Leo?" I raised an eyebrow. "Your accounts are frozen. Your credit cards have been declined. The luxury cars parked outside in the driveway? Leased under Thorne Capital corporate accounts. And as of forty seconds ago, the corporate credit lines have been revoked by the primary lienholder—which happens to be Vance Global."

As if on cue, a loud, heavy mechanical thud echoed from the front gates outside.

We all turned toward the tall windows.

Headlights cut through the rainy dark. Three black SUV bearing the discreet, gold-embossed emblem of Vance Global Security rolled up the paved driveway, their tires hissing against the wet stone.

Beatrice clutched her chest, letting out a sharp gasp. "Julian... Julian, make them stop! What is happening to us?"

Julian looked completely broken. The arrogant titan of industry was gone, replaced by a terrified man realizing he had just signed his own financial death warrant.

"Elena," Julian said, his voice cracking as he took a tentative step toward me. He reached out, his hands trembling. "Elena, please. We can talk about this. Five years... think of our history. We can go to counseling. We can cancel the divorce. We can fix this together."

I looked down at the crumpled one-dollar bill I was still holding in my hand. I dropped it back onto his empty plate, right into the dark truffle sauce.

"The dinner was lovely, Julian," I said softly. "But the bill has been settled."

Heavy footsteps echoed in the grand foyer outside the dining room doors.
