Chapter 1 - The Weight of a ConfessionThe autumn wind rustled through the canopy overhead, scattering dry, golden leaves across the park bench where Claire sat with her babies. The silence that followed her confession felt heavier than stone.

Ethan Vance stood frozen, his chest rising and falling in shallow, ragged breaths. His mother stood a few paces behind him, her hands clasped tightly over her mouth, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the two sleeping infants wrapped in worn blankets.

"You're their father, Ethan."

The words echoed in Ethan's mind like a distant thunderclap. For years, he had believed Claire left him out of sheer malice, that she had grown tired of his corporate ambition and walked away without a backward glance. He had spent twelve hundred days hardening his heart, building an empire of steel and glass to drown out the bitter ache of abandonment.

Now, looking down at the twin boys whose tiny chests rose and falling in steady rhythm, all of that manufactured anger evaporated into thin air.

"Ethan..." Claire whispered, her voice cracking as fresh tears spilled over her lashes. "I didn't mean to hurt you. But when I heard you tell your friend that you weren't sure about children... I thought I was setting you free."

Ethan slowly knelt down on the damp grass beside the bench. His fingers trembled as they hovered over the edge of the blanket. When his hand brushed against his son's tiny, warm hand, a violent shiver ran down his spine.
