Chapter 5 - Shadows at the WindowThe next morning, the crisp autumn sunlight washed over the Napa Valley estate, bringing a deceptive sense of peace.

Claire stood by the nursery window, watching the leaves drift down past the glass while the twins slept peacefully in their cribs. The heavy burden she had carried for years had lifted slightly, replaced by a strange, unfamiliar emotion: hope.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Ethan stepped into the room, holding a small tray with breakfast. He smiled gently, noticing the relaxed expression on her face. "You slept through the morning. How are you holding up?"

"I feel like I'm waking up from a multi-year nightmare," Claire admitted, turning away from the window to accept the tray. "Ethan... are you sure bringing us here won't drag you back into whatever war you fought with your board?"

Ethan stepped closer, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "That war is over, Claire. Richard Sterling is locked away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. He can't hurt us anymore."

Before Claire could answer, a piercing, high-pitched alarm echoed through the entire mansion.
