Chapter 11 - The Ambush on the Tarmac

The private Bombardier Global jet touched down smoothly on the sun-drenched tarmac of the Napa Valley airstrip, its heavy tires hissing against the warm asphalt as it decelerated. The flight from Zurich had been quiet, filled with the exhausted relief of people who believed the worst was behind them. The servers containing the encrypted financial ledgers of Project Genesis were safely locked in the cargo hold, and international authorities had already begun sweeping the offshore accounts tied to the black-site syndicate.
Inside the cabin, Ethan unbuckled his safety harness, a deep, long-awaited sense of calm settling into his chest. He looked across the aisle at Claire, who cradled one of the sleeping twins in her arms while Marcus monitored the exterior satellite feed on a tactical tablet.
"We're home," Ethan whispered, offering her a reassuring smile.
"Thank God," Claire breathed, her shoulders finally dropping from their tense, defensive posture. The dark circles under her eyes, the product of years of hiding and sleepless nights, seemed slightly lighter now that she was surrounded by the safety of her true home.
The main cabin door hissed open, and the folding stairs lowered outward, flooding the interior with the bright, golden California sunshine and the crisp, clean scent of eucalyptus and valley soil.
Marcus stepped out first, his hand resting casually near his sidearm as he scanned the perimeter. Everything looked normal—the rolling green vineyards stretching toward the hills, the private security SUV parked fifty yards away by the private hangar, and the clear, cloudless blue sky.
"All clear, boss," Marcus called back over his shoulder.
Ethan followed closely behind Claire, stepping down onto the tarmac with the twins. But the exact moment his boots hit the concrete, every instinct he had honed as a corporate titan and survivor screamed a deafening warning.
The security SUV parked by the hangar... its rear tires were completely flat. And the driver wasn't visible in the front seat.
"Marcus, wait!" Ethan shouted, his voice cutting sharply through the afternoon air.
Too late.
CRACK.
A high-powered sniper shot echoed across the empty airstrip, shattering the front windshield of the private jet in a spiderweb of safety glass. Marcus dropped instantly to the concrete, drawing his tactical sidearm and rolling behind a row of concrete barriers. Claire screamed, instinctively clutching the infant tighter to her chest as she dropped to her knees beside the aircraft’s landing gear.
From behind the corrugated metal storage sheds near the runway, three rogue operatives dressed in unmarked tactical gear emerged, raising automatic weapons with terrifying, professional synchronization.
"We're compromised!" Marcus roared, returning fire with controlled, rapid bursts from his sidearm to pin down the advancing shooters.

Ethan didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. Adrenaline surged through his veins, overriding every rational thought. He threw himself over Claire and the infant, shielding them with his own body while shouting toward the open cabin door of the jet.
"Pilot! Emergency takeoff protocol! Seal the cabin! Get Claire and the boys inside right now!"
