Chapter 12 - The Bloodied RunawayInside the jet, the emergency klaxons blared instantly, flashing a harsh red light through the cabin. The pilot sprang into action, overriding the pre-flight checklists as the hydraulic stairs began to retract with a frantic, mechanical whir.

"Ethan, get inside!" Claire cried, her face pale as paper with stark terror as she pushed the baby toward him, her hands trembling violently.

"I'm right behind you! Go!" Ethan yelled over the deafening crack of incoming automatic gunfire. He lunged to the side, snatching a dropped tactical assault rifle from Marcus's forward position. Spinning around from behind the heavy steel landing gear of the jet, Ethan shouldered the weapon and fired three rapid, calculated shots toward the advancing mercenaries.

The lead operative stumbled violently, his tactical vest absorbing the impact but knocking him off balance into a cluster of fuel drums. The other two operatives scrambled for frantic cover behind the flat-tired security SUV, returning heavy, suppressing fire that chewed up the asphalt inches from Ethan's boots, sending white-hot sparks flying into the air.

"Marcus, flank left! Draw their fire so we can break the line!" Ethan ordered, his voice ringing with absolute authority.

"On it, boss!" Marcus yelled back. Without a second thought, Marcus popped out from behind his concrete barrier, laying down a blistering wall of crossfire as he rolled swiftly across the open asphalt toward a row of baggage carts.

The diversion worked. The mercenaries shifted their aim toward Marcus, giving Ethan the narrow window he desperately needed.

Ethan scrambled backward, grabbing Claire by the arm and hauling her upward just as the cabin stairs reached their final locked position. The heavy pressurized door sealed shut with a heavy, satisfying thud, cutting off the deafening sound of gunfire outside.

"Get this bird in the air, NOW!" Ethan roared into the cockpit intercom.

The jet’s twin turbine engines shrieked to maximum power, vibrating violently through the entire fuselage as the aircraft surged forward down the runway at breakneck speed. Outside the oval windows, the final two rogue operatives broke cover, firing uselessly at the armored fuselage as the plane lifted gracefully off the tarmac, climbing steeply into the safety of the afternoon clouds.

Hours later, redirected safely to a secure federal military airstrip in San Diego under heavy armed guard, the immediate threat was neutralized. Federal interceptor units, acting on the Zurich data-dumps Ethan had provided, swept through the Napa airstrip coordinates and apprehended the remaining rogue cell members within the hour.

Back inside a secure, heavily fortified safe-haven overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the sun set in a brilliant blaze of gold and crimson. Claire sat on a plush sofa, both twins cooing happily in her lap, their tiny fingers wrapped securely around her thumbs. Ethan walked into the room, stepping softly, and sat down beside them, wrapping his arms around Claire and his sons, pulling them close.
