Chapter 12 - The Resurrection

Within hours, the news broke like a nuclear shockwave across the globe. The Resurrection of Elena Vance. Headlines flashed across every major network, eclipsing even the collapse of the financial empire. The woman Arthur Vance had claimed drowned at sea had not been murdered—she had been locked away in a high-tech subterranean dungeon beneath her own home, erased from the world while her husband built a empire over her living grave.
At a secure medical facility overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the heavy wooden door of a private recovery room clicked open.
Mateo stood in the doorway, his legs trembling so violently he could barely support his own weight. He clutched the plain ceramic coffee mug in his hand like a lifeline. On the bed, sitting propped up against crisp white pillows, was a woman who looked like a ghost stepped out of a childhood photograph.
Elena turned her head slowly. When her eyes met Mateo's, the air left the room.

"Mateo..." she breathed, tears instantly flooding her hollow eyes. "Look how tall you've grown. You have your father's jaw, but your spirit... your spirit is entirely mine."
Mateo dropped the mug. It shattered against the tiled floor with a sharp, familiar crack—but this time, there was no rage, no terror. Just a shattering of the final wall between the past and the future. He rushed forward, collapsing beside the bed and burying his face in his mother's frail hands as they both wept for the years stolen from them.
