Chapter 17 - The Web Unravels

Before Mateo could process the devastating contents of the grandfather's journal, the sharp wail of approaching sirens shattered the night air. Red and blue lights began to flash through the dense foliage of the botanical garden as local police cruisers and federal unmarked vehicles converged on the property.
Julian didn't panic. Instead, a grim, satisfied smirk spread across his scarred face.
"I didn't come here to kill you, Mateo," Julian said calmly, turning toward the shadows of the garden path. "I came to show you that the cycle never truly ends. The foundation of this family isn't built on stone or marble; it's built on a debt that can only be paid in full."
"Wait! Julian, stop!" Mateo shouted, taking a step forward.
"If you want to know where mother really went the night she 'escaped' to the sanctuary, check the botanical garden's original landscaping blueprint," Julian called back over his shoulder before disappearing seamlessly into the thickets of blooming jasmine. "Ask yourself why your mother chose this exact spot to build a memorial."
Seconds later, Rosa burst into the pavilion, panting heavily, followed by three armed federal agents with tactical flashlights drawn.
"Mateo! Are you alright? We saw an unauthorized thermal signature on the perimeter sensors," Rosa cried out, rushing to his side.
Mateo stood frozen, staring down at the leather notebook in his hands. He looked up at Rosa, his expression pale and haunted.

"Rosa," Mateo whispered, his voice trembling. "Tell me the truth. Why did my mother insist on building this memorial park right here, on the exact footprint of the old east conservatory?"
Rosa’s breath hitched. The color instantly drained from her face, confirming every dark suspicion screaming in Mateo's mind.
