Chapter 14 - The Echoes of the Past

The grand opening of the Vance Botanical Garden drew thousands of visitors from across the country, turning a former monument of corporate tyranny into a vibrant sanctuary of life and healing. For Mateo, walking through the lush pathways felt like stepping into an alternate reality where the nightmares of his childhood could no longer reach him.

Yet, shadows have a way of lingering in the soil long after the structure above has fallen.

Late one Tuesday evening, after the gates were locked and the tourists had gone home, Mateo remained behind in the central pavilion. He stood before the glass-encased mosaic of the shattered floral teacup, tracing the clean lines of the resin where the gold leaf and fine porcelain had been permanently fused together.

A soft crunch of gravel behind him broke the evening stillness.

Mateo didn't turn around immediately. He assumed it was Rosa doing her nightly rounds, or perhaps a groundskeeper checking the automated irrigation system. But the footsteps were too heavy, too deliberate, carrying an unmistakable, rhythmic cadence that sent a sudden, electric shock down his spine.

"You always did have a flair for dramatic redecorating, Mateo," a raspy, unfamiliar voice echoed through the open-air pavilion.

Mateo spun around, his breath catching in his throat. Standing at the edge of the pavilion's shadow was a man wearing a dark trench coat, his face partially obscured by the brim of a fedora. But it was the cold, hollow smile playing across the man's lips that froze Mateo in place—a smile that looked chillingly, impossibly like Arthur Vance.
