Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Blueprint

Arthur Vance’s face drained of color, a microscopic shift that only someone who had watched him terrorize the estate for a decade could notice. For a fraction of a second, the invincible corporate predator looked like a cornered animal.

"Rosa," Arthur growled, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal register. "Step away from the pedestal. Now."

"And miss the unveiling?" Rosa laughed, a sharp, metallic sound that sent shivers down Mateo's spine. She reached into her apron pocket, pulled out a heavy, old-fashioned brass key, and held it up. "You spent twenty years building this million-dollar mansion on a foundation of blood, bribes, and stolen patents, Arthur. You thought buying every cop and politician in the city would keep your secrets buried. But you forgot one thing."

"What are you talking about?" Mateo gasped, stepping back. He looked between his father and the maid, his mind racing. "Rosa, what is she to you? Who are you?"

"I am the sister of the woman your father threw off this very balcony fifteen years ago," Rosa snapped, her voice breaking with decades of suppressed agony.

Arthur lunged forward with terrifying speed, his hand reaching out to grab Rosa by the throat. But Mateo, driven by a sudden, protective surge of adrenaline, threw himself between them.

"Don't touch her!" Mateo screamed, shoving his father back with unexpected force.

Arthur stumbled, catching himself against the mahogany banister. He stared at his son, his eyes burning with pure hatred. "You stupid, ungrateful brat. You have no idea what you've just unleashed. That box doesn't just destroy me; it destroys everything you think you own."

Ignoring Arthur's warning, Rosa jammed the brass key into the newly exposed lockbox. With a heavy, metallic click, the lid sprang open.
