Chapter 25 - The Final Fragment

Later that evening, after the art center had closed and the children had all gone home, Mateo sat alone on the wooden porch of his small coastal cottage.

The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the Pacific Ocean in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep crimson. The ocean breeze carried the clean, salty scent of freedom, washing away every lingering phantom of the million-dollar mansion, the dark secrets, and the endless corridors of fear.

Mateo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, smooth object—a single piece of gold-leaf porcelain, no bigger than a coin, salvaged from the mosaic memorial in the botanical garden. It was the only physical remnant he had kept from the day his entire world shattered.

He didn't feel anger when he looked at it anymore. He didn't feel terror, or grief, or the burning urge for revenge. He only felt gratitude.

Because sometimes, in order to find out who you truly are, you have to let the entire world break around you—so you can finally build something real from the pieces.

Mateo smiled, tossed the small porcelain shard gently into a small potted fern beside his chair, and watched as it disappeared beneath the rich, dark soil, ready to nourish a brand-new life.
