Chapter 22 - The Queen's Checkmate

Back at the secure medical facility overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the illusion of absolute control shattered in less than sixty seconds.

Julian Vance was pacing the length of the private VIP suite, his phone glued to his ear as he barked frantic orders at his offshore asset managers. The live data stream on his laptop screen was flashing error codes in crimson text.

"What do you mean the accounts are frozen?" Julian roared into the phone, his face turning a sickly shade of pale. "Move the capital to the Cayman shell companies immediately! I don't care about the audit—just do it!"

In the corner of the room, Elena Vance sat in her velvet armchair. Unlike her frantic son, she didn't panic. Her face remained carved from cold, unyielding stone. She slowly turned her head toward the reinforced glass window overlooking the driveway, watching as half a dozen unmarked federal SUVs tore through the security gates, their tires screeching against the asphalt.

"It's over, Julian," Elena spoke, her voice eerily calm, cutting through her son's hysterical shouts.

Julian stopped pacing, staring at his mother in disbelief. "Over? We had everything! We had the trust, the foundation, the leverage—"

"We had arrogance," Elena corrected, her emerald eyes flashing with a dangerous, dark pride even in defeat. "We underestimated him. We thought he was just a frightened boy who broke a teacup. We forgot that the boy who breaks the cup is the only one fearless enough to shatter the whole house."

The heavy oak door of the suite exploded inward with a deafening crash.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!" tactical officers flooded the room, weapons drawn, lasers painting the walls in crimson dots.

Julian froze, his phone slipping from his nerveless fingers and clattering onto the plush carpet. He raised his hands slowly, a bitter, defeated laugh escaping his lips. Elena didn't even flinch as cold steel handcuffs were locked around her frail wrists. She looked out the window one last time, watching the ocean waves crash endlessly against the shore, knowing the empire was finally, truly dust.
