Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Sins

Inside the vault lay a stack of thick, leather-bound journals, a collection of flash drives, and a blood-stained wedding ring.

Mateo dropped to his knees, his trembling fingers reaching out to touch the ring. He recognized it instantly from old photographs. It belonged to his mother, Elena Vance, the woman his father claimed had abandoned them for another man when Mateo was just a baby.

"Read it, Mateo," Rosa urged softly, handing him the top journal. "Read what your father did to build his empire."

Mateo flipped open the aged pages. The handwriting was his mother's, neat and precise, but the entries grew increasingly frantic and terrifying as they progressed.

March 14: Arthur stole Dr. Alistair’s quantum encryption algorithm today. If Alistair goes public, Arthur threatened to frame him for industrial espionage.

May 22: I found the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. He’s laundering money for the syndicate. He knows I know. He locked me in the east wing.

July 4: If you are reading this and I am gone, look at the foundation of the east conservatory. That is where he hid the body of my brother when he tried to help me escape.

Mateo looked up, tears streaming down his face. The reality of his life—the gilded cage, the endless psychological abuse, the cold, loveless halls—shattered entirely. His entire existence was built on a foundation of murder and corporate theft.

"You lied," Mateo whispered, looking up at his father. "You told me she left us."

Arthur Vance wasn't cowering anymore. A dark, sinister chuckle escaped his lips, growing louder until it echoed off the marble walls. He slowly straightened his tie, his expression turning into a mask of pure, unadulterated menace.

"Left you?" Arthur mocked, his voice dripping with venom. "Of course she left. In pieces, scattered across the bay. And you, my foolish son, just signed your own death warrant by opening that box."
