Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The barrel of the gun was locked dead on Rosa's heart. Mateo's breath caught in his throat. He looked at his father—a man he had feared, tried to please, and ultimately hated—and realized there was no humanity left in him.

"Do it, then," Rosa whispered defiantly, taking one step closer. "Pull the trigger. But know this, Arthur: the moment you fire, the dead man switch activates. The police are already outside the gates."

True to her word, a distant, wailing siren cut through the night air, growing louder by the second. Red and blue lights began to flash through the tiny ventilation slats of the steel shutters, casting wild, frantic patterns across the marble floor.

Arthur’s hand trembled. He looked at the door, then back at Rosa, then down at Mateo. The walls were closing in. The empire he had spent a lifetime murdering and scheming to build was crumbling in a matter of minutes.

"You think you’ve won?" Arthur hissed, his eyes bloodshot and unhinged. He slowly shifted the barrel of the gun away from Rosa—and pointed it directly at his own temple. "I built this family, and if I go down, I'm taking my legacy with me!"

"Father, no!" Mateo screamed, lunging forward.

BANG.

The gunshot echoed like thunder in the enclosed hallway, shaking the very foundations of the million-dollar mansion.
