Chapter 17 - The Fall of the Syndicate

The dismantling of the international syndicate was swift, brutal, and entirely surgical. With Director K and his primary operatives detained at sea under maritime emergency jurisdiction and handed over to federal authorities upon docking in Boston, the entire criminal network collapsed like a house of cards.

Back in Manhattan, the morning news was dominated by headlines that completely eclipsed the initial Vanguard Capital scandal.

"AEGIS GLOBAL UNCOVERS INTERNATIONAL SMUGGLING RING: FEDERAL AUTHORITIES SEIZE BILLIONS IN ILLICIT ASSETS."

I sat at my desk in the executive suite of Aegis Global, sipping my morning coffee while watching the live news broadcast. Footage of federal agents hauling crates of contraband and financial records off the Titan Voyager played on loop across every major network.

My phone buzzed softly on the desk. It was a secure call from the federal penitentiary upstate.

I pressed speakerphone.

"Sophia?" Alexander’s voice came through the line, sounding hollow, thin, and broken beyond recognition. He had been transferred to a high-security cell block following the syndicate's collapse, completely cut off from the outside world.

"I'm here, Alexander," I said evenly.

"I heard the news," he whispered, a tremor of pure despair cracking his voice. "The syndicate... they're gone. Everything is gone. The feds took everything. They even seized the trust accounts my mother set up."

"You built an empire on sand, Alexander," I replied, my voice devoid of anger, carrying only the weight of absolute finality. "You thought you could use people as disposable chess pieces. You thought I was just a naive girl you could lock away when you were done with her."

"Please, Sophia," he sobbed quietly into the receiver. "Just... tell them to ease up on my sentence. Twelve years... I won't survive twelve years in here."

"When you signed my name on those fraudulent asset transfers, you didn't just try to steal my money—you tried to steal my entire life," I said, my voice hardening like steel. "You wrote your own sentence the day you brought Khloe onto that honeymoon flight. Live with it."

I pressed the disconnect button, cutting off the call permanently. I blocked the prison number from my system, consigning him to the silence he deserved.
