Chapter 3 - The Terminal Mirage

The Boeing 777 touched down on the sun-drenched tarmac of Kahului Airport in Maui with a sharp, metallic screech. The cabin lights flickered as the massive aircraft taxied toward the gate. Passengers began unbuckling their seatbelts, grabbing overhead luggage, and buzzing with vacation excitement.
Alexander stood up smoothly, adjusting his tailored linen blazer, while Khloe reapplied her crimson lipstick with practiced precision. They swept down the jet bridge, feeling like royalty ready to claim their kingdom.
As they stepped into the arrivals terminal, Alexander scanned the crowd for the driver holding a placard with his name. Instead, two burly men in plain black polo shirts approached them with wide, confused expressions.
"Mr. Sterling?" the taller one asked, stepping directly into their path.
"Yes. Where is the car? And where is the resort liaison?" Alexander snapped, his patience wearing thin from the long flight.
The two men exchanged panicked glances. "Sir, we were hired to pick up Mrs. Sophia Sterling and escort her to the isolated estate on the north shore. Where is your wife?"
Alexander’s expression darkened. "She stayed behind in New York. Stomach bug. Now, where is our transport?"
The men stared at him blankly. "Sir... our employer said the whole plan hinged on her being here. Without her, the secondary wire transfer from New0 York didn't clear. Our contract is void."
Before Alexander could threaten them with legal action, his phone buzzed violently in his palm. It was an incoming email notification from an unknown, encrypted server.

His fingers trembling slightly, he unlocked the screen and read the opening lines: "Alexander. Happy honeymoon. I truly wanted to go with you, but I find the concept of a ménage à trois rather exhausting. Oh, a minor administrative detail I forgot to mention at the airport..."
Alexander froze in the middle of the crowded terminal, the tropical heat suddenly feeling like a freezing chamber.
