Chapter 7 - The Morning After

Dawn broke over Manhattan with a crisp, brilliant clarity. The morning paper editions were hitting the stands, and digital news alerts were flashing across millions of smartphone screens nationwide.
I sat at my kitchen island, a fresh cup of dark roast coffee steaming beside my laptop. The front-page headline of the Wall Street Journal blazed in bold, aggressive font: "VANGUARD CAPITAL SCANDAL: CEO ALEXANDER STERLING UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOR CORPORATE FRAUD AND ASSET EMBEZZLEMENT."
Below the headline was a detailed, meticulously documented exposé complete with leaked bank statements, shell company registries, and internal emails detailing Alexander’s scheme to defraud his wife and misappropriate investor funds. Marcus had done an exceptional job.
My phone began to ring incessantly. Unknown numbers, media outlets, former business associates, and frantic relatives were blowing up my line. I ignored them all, setting the phone to silent.
Suddenly, the intercom buzzer at my apartment door chimed.
I walked over, pressed the speaker button, and listened.
"Sophia? Sophia, please, I know you're in there!" Alexander’s voice cracked through the speaker, sounding desperate, ragged, and utterly broken. "Please, open the door! We need to talk! We can fix this, I swear to God, just let me explain!"
He had somehow managed to catch a red-eye flight back from Maui, burning through his last hidden stash of emergency physical cash just to get back to New York.
I smiled softly, leaning close to the intercom microphone.
"There's nothing to explain, Alexander," I said, my voice cool, steady, and amplified throughout the hallway. "You wanted a partner who would blindly follow you anywhere. But you forgot one crucial detail..."
May you like
I paused, letting the silence hang heavy in the air.
"...I own the airline, I own the building, and I own every single brick of the foundation you tried to stand on."
