Chapter 9 - Ashes and Diamonds

Three months later, the federal trial concluded with swift, unyielding precision. The evidence compiled by my private investigator and legal team was so airtight that Alexander didn't even attempt to mount a defense. Pleading guilty in exchange for a slightly reduced sentence, he was sentenced to twelve years in a federal penitentiary upstate, with zero chance of parole for the first eight.

Khloe, realizing her legal jeopardy as an active co-conspirator in the corporate asset stripping, turned state's evidence early, testifying against Alexander in exchange for a lesser sentence of probation and community service. But her reputation in the corporate world was utterly incinerated; no firm in the country would ever touch a secretary notorious for helping embezzle millions.

As for me, I stood on the private balcony of my newly renovated penthouse overlooking Central Park, the autumn breeze rustling through my hair. The legal proceedings to completely dissolve my marriage on grounds of severe fraud and matrimonial abandonment had been finalized that very morning. My maiden name had been legally restored, and the family trust was more secure than it had ever been.

Life didn't end when betrayal knocked on the door. Sometimes, it merely cleared away the debris to reveal something infinitely stronger, sharper, and completely unbreakable underneath.

I raised a glass of champagne to the glittering city skyline spread out before me, savoring the absolute, intoxicating taste of total victory.
