Chapter 29 - The Unconquered Path

The morning sun rose over New York with brilliant, blinding intensity, casting golden light across the sleek, minimalist lines of my penthouse office. I sat at my executive desk, reviewing the global expansion portfolio for Aegis Global’s new European branches in London, Zurich, and Frankfurt.

My phone buzzed softly on the wood. It was an automated notification from our legal department confirming that the final corporate restructuring of our overseas philanthropic trusts was officially complete.

Marcus walked into the office, holding a tablet displaying the morning financial headlines.

"Looks like the international markets are responding exceptionally well to our European expansion announcement, Sophia," Marcus reported, tossing the tablet onto the desk. "Stock valuation is up twelve percent in early trading."

"Good," I replied calmly, signing a digital approval document with a single fluid keystroke. "Make sure our compliance teams in Zurich are running double-audit checks on all incoming asset transfers. We don't leave any room for oversight."

"Already handled," Marcus smiled, turning to head toward the door. Oh, by the way—warden at the upstate federal facility called earlier regarding Alexander Sterling."

I paused, looking up from my screen. "Did he try to appeal again?"

"No," Marcus said, his tone entirely neutral. "He stopped speaking months ago. Refuses visitors, refuses recreation time. The prison psychiatrist says he’s completely retreated inward. He’s living as a ghost in his own mind."

I stared out the window for a quiet moment, watching a hawk soar gracefully through the bright blue sky above Central Park.

"A fitting end for a man who tried to make ghosts out of everyone else," I murmured softly.

Marcus nodded once, then slipped quietly out of the office, closing the door behind him.
