Chapter 28 - Shadows in the Past

Later that evening, after the gala had concluded and the guests had drifted out into the warm Manhattan night, I returned to my penthouse office. The city lights twinkled like a constellation of fallen stars across the vast expanse of the window glass.
I walked over to the private wall safe hidden behind a mahogany bookshelf, entering the biometric security code. The heavy steel door swung open silently, revealing a single, small manila envelope resting on the velvet-lined shelf.
Inside was my old passport—the navy blue booklet Alexander had thrust into my sweaty hand at the JFK check-in counter three years ago, just before I walked away from a marriage built on lies.
I pulled the passport out, flipping through its pristine, unstamped pages. It felt like an artifact from a completely different lifetime—a lifetime belonging to a woman who was polite, obedient, and entirely unaware of her own strength.
I walked over to the sleek modern fireplace built into the living room wall, striking a long match, and held the corner of the passport to the flame.

I watched quietly as the fire consumed the paper, turning the blue cover and the pages of a dead past into fine, weightless ash. I let the charred remains drop into a small ceramic dish, watching the smoke drift upward and vanish into the open air of the high-ceilinged room.
There was no nostalgia, no lingering sadness, and no regret. Only the absolute, blazing clarity of a present built entirely by my own design.
