Chapter 35 - The Unseen Encounter

Following the keynote address, the VIP reception in the grand salon overlooking Lake Geneva was a dizzying whirlwind of handshakes, diplomatic introductions, and international press inquiries. I navigated the room with practiced grace, holding a crystal glass of sparkling water while exchanging polite pleasantries with central bank governors and senior financial regulators.

As I stepped toward the quieter terrace doors to catch a breath of the crisp Swiss air, a familiar voice cut through the murmur of conversation.

"Sophia. It’s been a long time."

I stopped in my tracks. The voice was smooth, cultured, but unmistakably laced with a sharp, calculating edge that sent a phantom shiver down my spine—not out of fear, but out of absolute disdain.

I turned slowly. Standing near the marble pillars was a man in an impeccably tailored Italian suit, his graying hair combed back with precise symmetry. It was Julian Vance, Victor Vance’s older brother and the hidden patriarch of the European syndicate network that had survived the initial federal crackdowns.

"Julian," I said calmly, my expression entirely unperturbed as I held his gaze. "I thought your family tree had been completely pruned of dead weight."

Julian let out a low, humorless chuckle, stepping closer but keeping a respectful distance from the security detail stationed near the terrace. "My brother lacked vision, Sophia. He played small-time games and got caught in a small-time trap. But you... you proved to be an exceptionally talented player. You dismantled Vanguard, you neutralized the shipping routes, and you even scrubbed our Iceland backup node last week."

So it was Julian who had authorized the dead-man’s switch.

"If you came here to offer me a partnership or a veiled threat, Julian, you wasted your plane ticket," I replied, my voice cool, steady, and utterly devoid of intimidation. "The syndicate is dead. Alexander is rotting in a federal cell. And if you think a polite conversation in Geneva changes the fact that your entire network is on the FBI’s red-notice list, you are severely mistaken."

Julian smiled thinly, raising his champagne flute in a mock toast. "I didn't come to threaten you, Sophia. I came to offer a mutual acknowledgment. One apex predator to another. Enjoy your victory tonight. But remember—empires built on glass towers always invite storms."

"My tower isn't glass, Julian," I said, turning my back on him with absolute dismissal. "It's forged in titanium. And the next storm that hits will sweep you away with the dust."
