Chapter 4 - THE GHOSTS OF THE PAST

Twenty minutes later, the Cedar Street apartment was swarming with local police, federal marshals, and emergency medical personnel. Chloe and Tyler had been wrapped in warm thermal blankets and checked by a team of elite pediatricians brought in directly by James’s private medical network.
Rachel Matthews arrived in the middle of the chaos, pushing her way through the police tape at the front entrance of the building, her face pale, her worn-out diner shoes scuffed with mud.
“Chloe! Tyler!” Rachel screamed, bursting through the ruined doorway of apartment 3-B.
She stopped dead in her tracks.
Standing in the center of the cramped, ruined kitchen wasn't just a team of armed guards—it was James McKenzie.
The man she hadn't seen in nearly nine years. The man she had fled from in the dead of night, terrified that his billionaire family would crush her existence, raising her children in secret shadows to keep them safe from the vicious corporate warfare of the McKenzie dynasty.
“James...” Rachel whispered, her knees weakening as the air rushed out of her lungs.
James turned around slowly. The anger that had fueled his breach of the apartment dissolved instantly, replaced by a devastating, profound wave of sorrow and realization.
“Rachel,” he said softly, walking toward her across the splintered floorboards. “You were alive. All this time... you let me believe you walked away.”
“I had to,” Rachel sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks as she looked at him. “Your father... Arthur McKenzie... he tracked me down when I was pregnant with Chloe. He told me that if I didn't disappear, he would ensure my family was ruined, that my child would be taken from me before she drew her first breath. So I ran.”
James stopped a foot away from her, his hands trembling. He looked back at Chloe, who was holding the warm bottle for Tyler while watching them with wide, curious eyes.
“Chloe isn't just your daughter, Rachel,” James whispered, his voice breaking. “She called me. She dialed a number she found hidden behind a phone—a number you thought you’d never have to use.”
Rachel closed her eyes, a sob tearing from her throat. “I kept it there... just in case the worst ever happened.”

“The worst happened,” James said firmly, pulling Rachel into his arms and holding her tightly against his chest. “But it’s over now. No one will ever hurt you or the children again.”
Across the room, Derek Patterson was being hauled to his feet by two federal marshals, cursing and thrashing as the steel handcuffs snapped shut around his wrists.
