Chapter 5 - THE CHRONICLES OF THE SYNDICATE

By midnight, the terrifying reality of Derek Patterson’s background had begun to unravel.

Back at James’s sprawling estate on the outskirts of the city, Chloe and Tyler were sleeping soundly in a magnificent, sunlit nursery—surrounded by toys, soft blankets, and medical monitors ensuring their complete recovery.

James and Rachel sat across from each other in the grand mahogany-paneled library, lit only by the warm glow of the fireplace. Marcus stood nearby, handing a thick, encrypted dossier over to James.

“Mr. McKenzie, Mrs. McKenzie,” Marcus began, clearing his throat. “We dug into Derek Patterson’s financial history. He wasn't just a random abusive boyfriend. He was on a monthly retainer paid by an offshore shell company.”

James frowned, opening the folder. “Whose company?”

“The McKenzie-Patterson Family Trust,” Marcus replied grimly. “Managed directly by your late father’s estate executors. For the last five years, someone has been paying Derek to keep tabs on Rachel, monitor her movements, and ensure she stayed isolated in the slums.”

Rachel gasped, pressing a hand to her mouth. “Your father... even after he died, his network was still watching us?”

“They weren't just watching,” James said, his eyes hardening into flint as he scanned the documents. “They were building a systemic archive of every illegitimate heir across our family tree. Just like the Sterling dynasty in Detroit, my father’s empire was built on controlling bloodlines, hiding children, and using human leverage for corporate dominance.”

“And Derek was part of that network,” Rachel whispered.

“He was a pawn,” James corrected coldly. “A pawn who just signed his own ticket to a federal supermax prison for child endangerment and corporate conspiracy.”

Suddenly, James’s secure satellite phone buzzed violently on the desk.

He picked it up, swiping the screen. It was Logan, his chief of intelligence.

“Boss, we have a major breach,” Logan reported, his voice tense over the secure line. “Federal marshals just raided the old McKenzie shipping warehouse down by the harbor. They found a secondary server farm operated by your father’s old legal team.”

“What’s on the server, Logan?”

“Project Heir-Lock files, sir. But that’s not all. There’s a missing file regarding Tyler’s birth records. Mr. McKenzie... Tyler isn't an only child.”

James froze. “What are you talking about?”

“Rachel gave birth to twins,” Logan said grimly. “Just like the Detroit case. Tyler had a twin brother, born four years ago, who was intercepted at birth by the syndicate and placed into a clandestine adoption ring before Rachel even woke up.”
