Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Shadows

The amber light of the study cast long, jagged shadows across the polished walnut floorboards as Leo Moretti stared down at the open ledger. At eighteen, he possessed his father’s unnerving stillness, the kind of quiet focus that made grown men check their pockets and re-evaluate their life choices. Across the room, Sophia stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her fingers tracing the edge of the newly drafted structural blueprint of the estate's expanded perimeter.

"The masonry on the north wall is settling faster than projected," Sophia noted, her voice steady and clinical. "If someone wanted to breach the compound using the old drainage systems, the weight distribution would give them away before they even cleared the vineyard line."

"Let them try," Leo replied, his tone flat, devoid of youthful arrogance. It was simply a statement of fact. "My father spent twenty years turning this house into a vault. I intend to make it a tomb for anyone foolish enough to test the name."

The heavy oak door swung open without a preliminary knock, revealing Marco. The old consigliere looked grayer than he had a year ago, the lines around his eyes deeply etched by decades of carrying the syndicate's darkest secrets. In his hand, he held a sleek, encrypted burner phone that was vibrating violently against the wood of his palm.

"It's from the Palermo docks," Marco said, his voice dropping into a raspy whisper. "The shipment we intercepted from the Tunisian freighter wasn't just financial records. The manifest lists chemical components—compounds used in military-grade incendiary devices."

Leo stood up slowly, adjusting the cuffs of his dark suit jacket. "Who ordered it?"

"That's the complication," Marco said, stepping further into the room and glancing briefly at Sophia. "The shipping container was registered under a dead man’s alias—one of Dominic Vance's old shell companies in Malta. But the funds used to clear customs yesterday morning didn't come from Europe. They came from an offshore account originating in Geneva, registered to a trust fund that hasn't been active since Valentina died."

Sophia turned away from the window, her dark eyes narrowing. "Valentina’s private accounts were completely liquidated when she was sent to Montenegro. My mother checked the internal audit logs three years ago."

"Accounts can have secondary beneficiaries," Leo said, walking toward the desk. He picked up the burner phone, silencing the vibration with a single press of his thumb. "Someone inside the inner circle is still cleaning up her unfinished business. Or worse... someone believes Valentina left a successor behind."
