Chapter 23 - The Descent into the Catacombs

Emergency amber strips flared along the baseboards of the bunker, casting long, bruised shadows across the concrete walls. Sophia didn't panic; she reached instinctively for the service pistol holstered beneath her workstation, her ears straining against the low hum of the auxiliary generator.

"It’s not an external hack," Sophia said, her voice barely above a whisper. "The override command originated from the old vineyard tunnel junction—the exact spot your father sealed a decade ago."

Leo pulled the slide of his Beretta back with a sharp, metallic clack, checking the round in the chamber. "The seal wasn't breached from the outside. Someone opened it from the inside using a master biometric override."

"Which means only three people alive possess that level of access," Sophia noted, stepping away from the desk. "You, me, and..."

"Your father," a voice echoed from the dark metallic doorway leading to the service corridor.

Elena stood in the threshold, her hands empty, her face pale under the amber emergency lights. But she wasn't trembling. For the first time in twenty years, the longtime maid of the Moretti estate looked entirely at peace, carrying the weight of a secret that could destroy the entire dynasty.

"Mama?" Sophia lowered her pistol slightly, her breath catching in her throat. "What are you doing down here?"

"I didn't clean the master archives for thirty years just to watch you both walk into a trap blind," Elena said softly, stepping into the bunker. She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out an old, grease-stained leather notebook—the kind used by hospital administrators in the late nineties. "Valentina didn't hide the third child from Rocco. She hid him from me."

Leo kept his weapon leveled, though his eyes burned with intense scrutiny. "Explain."

"The night you were born at St. Helena," Elena said, her voice steady and clear, "there weren't two babies in that delivery room. There were three boys triplets. Valentina knew Rocco would only accept one true heir to inherit the primary syndicate seat. She planned to sell the other two to rival families in Marseille and Milan as leverage."

Elena looked directly at Leo. "I saved you by pulling you out of the trash area where Valentina’s men left you to die. I let Sophia find you because I knew Rocco’s guilt would force him to protect you. But I couldn't save the third one. He was already taken by a nurse loyal to the Vane tempest."

"And that third brother," Sophia asked, her heart pounding against her ribs, "who is he?"

Before Elena could answer, a loud, localized explosion ripped through the ceiling above the bunker, showering the concrete floor with dust and pulverized plaster.
