Chapter 21 - The Unseen Ledger

The midnight air over the Mediterranean coastline carried the crisp scent of salt and pine, but inside the private archive room of the Moretti estate, the atmosphere was dense with the smell of aging paper and cold steel. Leo Moretti sat at the center mahogany desk, the harsh beam of a brass desk lamp illuminating a set of documents that had just been recovered from a sealed vault in Malta.
Across from him, Sophia stood leaning against the bookshelf, her arms crossed, her eyes fixed on the financial spreadsheets scattered across the polished wood.
"These aren't syndicate accounts," Sophia said, her voice cutting through the quiet hum of the room's climate-control system. "They’re tracking logistics, but not for oil, weapons, or shipping containers. They’re tracking land acquisitions across Northern Italy—specifically agricultural plots adjacent to state infrastructure projects."
Leo picked up a heavy, fountain-penned signature card bearing an old, unfamiliar seal. "This isn't Valentina’s handwriting, nor is it anything my father ever authorized. These accounts were opened under a dormant shell corporation named Aeterna Holding, registered three days after Julian and Victor were locked away in the fermentation vaults."
"Which means someone else survived the purge," Sophia whispered, her posture stiffening. "Someone who didn't care about the guns or the territory, but was playing a much longer game."
Before Leo could answer, a sharp, rhythmic tapping echoed from the reinforced glass window facing the private courtyard. It wasn't a gunshot or a signal flare; it was a standard code used by the elite courier division of the Sicilian banking guild—three short taps, one long.
Leo stood up smoothly, drawing his Beretta from his shoulder holster as he walked to the window. He pushed the heavy latch and slid the glass open. Perched on the stone sill was a heavy, wax-sealed leather pouch stamped with the emblem of Alberto Rossi, the Swiss banker who had died of natural causes in Geneva six months prior.
"Alberto’s estate executor," Leo muttered, breaking the wax seal with his thumb. Inside was a single flash drive made of brushed titanium and a handwritten note: ‘The true ledger was never in Geneva. It was waiting for the third heir.’

Sophia stepped closer, her brow furrowing. "Third heir? Valentina only had Julian and you. The medical records from St. Helena Private Hospital confirmed it."
"Medical records," Leo said, his dark eyes locking onto the titanium drive, "are only as accurate as the person who pays the doctor."
