Chapter 36 - Breach and Clear
Leo moved through the threshold first, his carbine leveled at chest height. Two Vanguard operatives spun around from the auxiliary monitoring station, reaching for their sidearms, but Leo’s weapon barked twice with suppressed efficiency. Both men dropped instantly, sliding silently against the gray concrete floor.
"Clear!" Leo called out sharply.
Sophia rushed past him, dropping to her knees before the massive primary control console in the center of the room. The main monitor was flashing a terrifying bright red warning banner: SYSTEM OVERRIDE IN PROGRESS: 84% COMPLETE.
"They've locked the master terminal," Sophia gasped, her fingers flying across the keyboard with blinding speed as she plugged her tactical tablet directly into the mainframe port. "They’ve initiated an absolute lockout sequence. If I force a manual reset, the system will trigger a self-destruct loop that fries every transformer in the province."
"Can you stop it?" Leo demanded, standing guard over the control room door, his eyes fixed on the reinforced glass corridor outside.
"I can," Sophia breathed, her forehead beaded with sweat, "if I can bypass their physical firewall before the progress bar hits ninety percent."
Suddenly, heavy boots thundered down the exterior hallway. The reinforced glass windows shivered under a hail of submachine gun fire as unseen operatives opened fire from the corridor. Bullets chewed through the drywall, showering the control room in plaster and pulverized concrete.
"Leo!" Sophia warned, her eyes locked on her screen. 91%... 92%...
Leo didn't flinch. He leaned around the doorframe, returning disciplined, controlled bursts of fire down the hallway, dropping the first two attackers attempting to storm the control room. But more footsteps echoed behind them—a heavily armed tactical squad was moving in to finish the job.
"Sophia, talk to me!" Leo shouted over the deafening clatter of gunfire.
"Hold them off for ten seconds!" she yelled back, her hands moving like lightning across the keyboard as she executed a complex neural-net bypass script.

With a sharp, triumphant keystroke, Sophia hit the enter key.
The main monitor flashed from bright red to a clean, steady blue. The progress bar vanished, replaced by a simple, unyielding system message: OVERRIDE REJECTED. SYSTEM SECURED.
