Chapter 39 - The Final Stand

Standing on the upper landing of the grand staircase, illuminated by the orange glow of a nearby fire, was a man holding a heavy tactical breaching charge with a digital detonator strapped in his palm. It wasn't Dante; it was a scarred, ruthless mercenary commander—Vance’s former second-in-command, Yuri.
And strapped securely to a chair beside him, his hands bound behind his back, was Rocco Moretti.
Rocco’s face was bruised and bleeding from a heavy blow, but his dark eyes burned with an unyielding, terrifying defiance as he looked down at his son and Sophia standing in the ruined foyer below.
"Don't trade the keys for an old man, Leo!" Rocco shouted, his voice ringing loud and clear through the smoke-filled hall. "A Moretti doesn't bargain with rats!"
"Shut your mouth, old man!" Yuri snarled, pressing the barrel of his pistol against Rocco’s temple. He looked down at Leo, a cruel, mocking grin cutting across his scarred jaw. "Drop your weapons, Moretti! Both of you! Toss your sidearms onto the floor right now, or I blow this entire wing—and your grandfather—straight into the Mediterranean."
Leo stared up at Yuri, his finger resting lightly on the trigger of his carbine. His dark eyes flickered briefly to Rocco, then to Sophia standing beside him.
Sophia didn't hesitate. She didn't drop her weapon, but her left hand moved with imperceptible subtlety, sliding a small, encrypted override transmitter out of her tactical pouch and pressing it against her hidden belt terminal.
"You think you won because you breached the walls, Yuri?" Sophia called out, her voice cutting through the smoke with absolute, icy calm. "You forgot the golden rule of architecture: if you don't understand the foundation you're standing on, the building will swallow you whole."
Yuri frowned, tightening his grip on Rocco’s collar. "What are you talking about, you little—"
"Now, Leo!" Sophia screamed.
With blinding speed, Leo didn't drop his weapon—he raised it, firing two precise, lightning-fast rounds through the wooden banister post directly into Yuri’s chest.
Simultaneously, Sophia slammed her palm down on the override transmitter.
With a deafening mechanical roar, the reinforced steel floor panels beneath Yuri’s feet suddenly dropped away like a trapdoor. The emergency structural purge protocol—engineered specifically for this scenario a decade ago—had just been triggered.

Yuri shrieked in terror as the floor collapsed beneath him, sending him tumbling headfirst down into the dark, subterranean archive shafts below, the detonator flying uselessly from his hand.
With a dull, muffled crash far beneath the mansion, the trapdoor slammed shut.
