Chapter 8 - The Ghost on the Ridge

Two hundred miles away, high in the mist-shrouded peaks of the Montenegrin mountains, a solitary black car wound its way along a treacherous, unpaved cliffside road. Inside the vehicle sat two silent enforcers in dark suits, and in the back seat, staring blankly out the frosted window, sat Valentina.

The car stopped outside a forbidding, stone-walled monastery that seemed carved directly into the jagged rock face. The iron gates groaned open like a dying beast.

"Out," the driver commanded, opening her door.

Valentina stepped out into the freezing mountain wind, pulling her gray wool shawl tightly around her shoulders. She looked up at the towering gothic arches of the monastery. There were no guards here. No cameras. No money. Just endless stone, absolute isolation, and the roaring wind of a world that had completely erased her name.

As she walked toward the heavy oak doors, a sharp metallic click echoed from behind her. She turned her head.

Parked at the edge of the cliff, overlooking the vast, endless abyss of the mountain valley, was a sleek black Mercedes sedan. The driver's window rolled down an inch. A single gloved hand rested on the steering wheel, holding a gold pocket watch that caught the pale morning light.

Valentina’s heart stopped. She knew that watch. It was the one Rocco’s father had given him on his wedding day—the one symbol of absolute power that could never be faked or replaced.

The car didn't stop. It shifted into gear, turned around on the narrow ridge, and disappeared back down the mountain road into the mist, leaving Valentina entirely alone with the ghosts of her own design.
