Chapter 19 - The Architecture of Peace

Three months later, the reconstruction of the estate's security perimeter was finally complete.
The morning sun washed over the meticulously manicured lawns of the Moretti vineyard, catching the glint of the new reinforced glass panels along the west wing. Sophia stood on the terrace balcony, reviewing the final structural blueprints on her tablet, a cup of steaming black coffee resting on the iron railing beside her.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her. She didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
Leo stepped out onto the balcony, leaning against the stone balustrade next to her, looking out over the vast expanse of the family vineyards that stretched toward the horizon.
"The structural load tests passed," Sophia said, not breaking her gaze from the digital layout. "Not a single blind spot left in the foundation. Even if an army tried to tunnel through the limestone shelf, the seismic sensors would trigger within three seconds."
Leo smiled faintly—a rare, genuine expression that softened the hard lines of his face. "You built this house into a fortress, Sophia. But you're the only reason it feels like a home."
Sophia finally looked up, her dark eyes meeting his. "A house only stands if the foundation is honest, Leo. Your father learned that the hard way."
Down in the courtyard below, Rocco Moretti walked slowly through the olive trees, holding young Leo by the hand—the younger boy who was now nine years old, laughing as he chased a stray cat across the stone pavers.

"My father wants to hand over the eastern syndicate operations to us next month," Leo said quietly, turning his gaze back to Sophia. "Geneva, Marseille, Palermo. All of it."
Sophia closed her tablet, the screen fading to black. "Then we’d better make sure the books—and the walls—are strong enough to hold it."
