Chapter 6 - The Confession of Shadows

Dawn broke over the Moretti estate, washing the manicured lawns and stone courtyards in a pale, cold light. The bullet holes in the dining room had already been concealed behind tall privacy screens, and the blood on the Persian rug was being scrubbed away by a crew of terrified cleaners.
In the high-security basement interrogation cells, Valentina Moretti sat chained to a metal chair. Her silk robe was stained with dust and dried mud; her hair fell across her face in wild, unkempt strands. She didn't look like an untouchable queen anymore. She looked like a cornered animal.
The heavy steel door swung open, and Rocco stepped into the damp, concrete room. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, revealing the intricate network of scars that told the history of every war he had ever survived.
He pulled up a steel chair, sat down directly across from her, and placed a thick manila folder on the metal table.
"The Zurich accounts have been frozen," Rocco said evenly. "Your brother in Palermo sent a wire transfer asking if you were dead yet. Apparently, family loyalty runs thin when the money stops flowing."
Valentina raised her head, her lips curling into a bitter, bloodless smile. "You think you’ve won, Rocco. You saved the boy. You killed Vance. But you'll never touch the rest of the council. They know what you did in Marseille. They know why your first son had to 'disappear' in the first place."
Rocco didn't blink. "My first son didn't disappear because of Marseille. He disappeared because you bribed a corrupt obstetrician to steal him from the delivery room and sell him to a rival syndicate in Milan as insurance against my power."
Valentina’s smile faltered. "How... how do you know that?"
Rocco slid a single photograph across the table. It showed an elderly doctor sitting in a detention chair in Sicily, surrounded by three of Rocco's most ruthless enforcers.
"Dr. Alessi confessed an hour ago," Rocco said quietly. "He kept records of every child he swapped for your family's financial gain. The baby Sophia found in the trash wasn't just a random plant—it was the twin brother you hid in a Milan orphanage six years ago, brought back here by Vance as leverage to blackmail you into handing over the syndicate."
Realization crashed down on Valentina like an avalanche. She hadn't just tried to murder a child; she had been double-crossed by her own co-conspirators, who planned to use her own secret against her.
"Rocco..." she whispered, leaning forward, the iron chains rattling against the table. "We are bound by blood. We built this empire together. If I go down, the entire Moretti syndicate burns with me. The federal prosecutors already have—"
"The federal prosecutors," Rocco interrupted, standing up slowly and buttoning his cuffs, "won't find anything. Because as of five minutes ago, Valentina Moretti officially died in a tragic private jet crash off the coast of Corsica."

Valentina froze, her breath catching in her throat. "What... what are you saying?"
"I am saying your funeral is scheduled for tomorrow," Rocco said, turning toward the heavy steel door. "You will spend the rest of your life in a private, unmarked monastery in the mountains of Montenegro. No name. No visitors. Just your prayers and your silence."
