Chapter 35 - Midnight at the Substation

The Palermo municipal substation was a sprawling, industrial complex of humming transformers, high-voltage towers, and reinforced concrete control buildings, surrounded by ten-foot chain-link fences topped with coiled razor wire.
The rain had begun to fall, a cold, blinding downpour that blurred the harsh amber glare of the security floodlights.
Parked half a mile down the unpaved access road, their unmarked black SUV sat completely cloaked in the shadows of an overgrown olive grove. In the back seat, Leo checked the magazine of his carbine while Sophia tapped rapidly on her ruggedized tactical tablet, decrypting the substation’s internal security camera loop to project a real-time thermal feed onto her screen.
"Four guards patrolling the perimeter fence," Sophia whispered, her fingers gliding across the glass. "Two stationary guards stationed outside the primary control room door. And inside... thermal signatures indicate at least three technicians hooked directly into the master console."
"Vanguard didn't send low-level thugs this time," Leo observed, studying the thermal feed. "Those are professional signals intelligence operatives. They’re using military-grade encryption gear."
"Which means they’re moments away from executing the final override," Sophia said, closing her tablet and slipping it into her tactical pouch. "If we wait another ten minutes, the provincial grid goes dark."
Leo opened the vehicle door, stepping out into the driving rain. "Let's go."
Moving with the silent, fluid deadliness of shadows, Leo and Sophia scaled the razor-wire fence using a specialized composite grappling line that left zero structural traces. They crossed the open gravel yard in seconds, hugging the concrete base of the main transformer building until they reached the service access door.
The door was deadbolted from the inside with an electronic mag-lock.
Sophia didn't hesitate. She pulled a compact digital interface tool from her belt, plugged it directly into the emergency maintenance port beside the door handle, and began inputting a rapid sequence of override commands.
Inside the control room, a muffled voice shouted an alarm.
