Chapter 9 - Shadows of the Past

Far away from the glittering towers of Boston, inside the stark, sterile gray walls of a maximum-security federal prison, Grant Sterling sat on the edge of a metal bunk, staring at a small, barred window.

The high-powered executive who once commanded billions of dollars, drove luxury sports cars, and dictated terms to corporate boards was gone. In his place was a broken, graying man wearing an orange jumpsuit bearing an inmate ID number.

The heavy iron door of his cell clanked open, and a guard tossed a small brown envelope onto his bunk.

"Mail call, Sterling," the guard barked before slamming the door shut and walking away.

Grant sluggishly reached out, picking up the envelope. There was no return address. Just his name, written in clean, precise, elegant handwriting that he recognized instantly.

His hands shook as he tore open the flap and pulled out a single photograph.

It was a picture taken in the sun-drenched gardens of an expansive estate in Vermont. In the center stood Maddie, looking radiant, powerful, and breathlessly free, holding a laughing, two-year-old toddler with bright eyes and a crown of dark curls. They were smiling—not with the forced perfection of a staged family portrait, but with the genuine, radiant joy of a life built on truth and survival.

On the back of the photograph, written in that same immaculate cursive, were three simple words:

May you like

Thank you, Grant.

A single tear spilled over Grant’s lashes, tracking down his hollow cheek and dropping onto the glossy paper, blurring the ink forever. He sank back against the cold steel wall, finally understanding the true magnitude of what he had destroyed—and knowing that he would never, ever get it back.
