Chapter 22 - Shadows in Zurich

Thousands of miles away, inside a sleek, soundproofed penthouse overlooking Lake Zurich, an elderly man in a bespoke charcoal suit stared at a wall of live financial monitors. His silver hair was meticulously combed, and his pale blue eyes reflected the green and red cascading numbers of global stock exchanges.
A sleek leather-bound dossier lay open on the glass table before him, featuring a full-page photograph of Maddie Sterling smiling at a charity gala in Boston.
The door behind him opened silently, and a tall, impeccably dressed woman in her late thirties stepped into the room. Her stride was predatory, her posture rigid.
"The message has been delivered, Grandfather," she said, her voice smooth and devoid of warmth.
The old man—Viktor Vance, patriarch of the Swiss-based Vance-Sterling banking dynasty and distant uncle to the late Arthur Vance—slowly turned his head. A faint, humorless smile touched his thin lips.
"Maddie Sterling is a remarkable creature," Viktor murmured, his voice rich with an old-world European accent. "She dismantled my nephew's corporation, outmaneuvered the federal courts, and built an empire out of ashes. But she made one fatal error."
"And what is that?" the woman asked, stepping closer to the monitors.
"She believed the game ended when she locked Grant away," Viktor replied, tapping a slender finger against the glass screen right over Maddie's face. "Grant was a fool, blinded by his own vanity. But the capital that funded Sterling Global in its infancy did not originate from American banks. It came from our vaults. And what the house of Vance provides, the house of Vance can reclaim."

The woman—Elena Vance, Viktor’s handpicked corporate executioner and chief intelligence strategist—nodded slowly. "Her green energy portfolio is vulnerable. If we trigger a synchronized liquidity squeeze across her European supply chains, her primary liquidity will dry up within forty-eight hours. She’ll be forced to liquidate her foundation assets just to keep Aegis Capital solvent."
"Do not rush," Viktor cautioned, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "A wounded lion fights desperately. We will not destroy her overnight. We will starve her kingdom piece by piece until she comes to Zurich herself to beg for mercy."
